This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Interface Polymers team on our pioneering mission to become the global leader in mixed plastics recycling, compatibility and surface functionality solutions for the polyolefin industry by innovating novel diblock copolymers. The team comprises well-established leaders from the polymer industry, together with world-class polymer research scientists.   • You will become a valued part of the Interface Polymers Applications Team based in the Materials Department at Loughborough University.
  • You will be using polymer processing and test equipment in the processing laboratories to develop new innovating applications for our novel diblock copolymers.
  • You will manage your own projects, in cooperation with our Senior Applications Scientist and the Application Development Leader.
  • You will work with our Business Development Director and Application Development Leader to define the goals of the project.
  • You will analyse your data, present it internally and externally.
  • You will write lab reports and document your developments and innovations, including, by filing patents.
  • Opportunities may arise for you to travel to customers to test and implement the materials.
  • You will work with IPL’s Chemistry Team to help design the right diblock for the application.

Full training will be given for use of equipment and you will be supported by experienced industrial supervisors.

We are looking for an adaptable, motivated, ‘can-do’ individual to join our team as a Polymer Applications Engineer to help us take laboratory scale ideas through to trials with industrial partners. This will require significant interest in polymer processing and testing and a desire to learn and solve new challenges, combined with the capacity to contribute to the company’s ongoing R&D work.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Strong science background with an active interest in polymers, the polymer industry, recycling of polymers.
  • Must have a materials related qualification – Bachelors, Masters, or PhD, with a strong focus on polymers or an industrial or research background.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in several of the following areas or related areas is a requirement:
    • Polymer types
    • Compounding
    • Injection moulding
    • Extrusion
    • Mechanical testing of plastics
  • The ability to produce data in an organised fashion, keep detailed records and present results in a concise manner.
  • Effective communication skills with a variety of audiences from technical and non-technical backgrounds.
  • Good inter-personal and teamworking skills.
  • You must possess the following attributes:
  • Highly motivated, dynamic, proactive with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude along with good organisational skills.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of polymer additives and their typical uses.
  • Experience of planning own work and working to deadlines.
  • Some knowledge of polymer packaging or recycling.
  • Adaptability to be able to design experiments in the lab that relate to customer requirements even when we cannot completely replicate what the customer is doing.
